News Channel Research - Film Riot

We decided early on that we wanted our channel to be reminiscent of Film Riot. All of us enjoyed Film Riot and it is actually something that got me into film making.

Film Riots Youtube Bio
"Film Riot is a how-to trip through filmmaking from the hyper-active mind of Ryan Connolly. From how to make great effects to following Triune Films through production, Film Riot explores the art of filmmaking in a way you've never seen." - Film Riot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tln-TAm0yUk - Film  Riot released an episode describing their process when filming an episode which was very interesting to watch.

Filming Style

  • Filmed primarily in front of a Green Screen
  • Contains short "sketches" that are relevant to the episode subject - such as a gunfight in a episode devoted to tutorials on muzzle flashes.
  • Uses Graphics to help portray an idea or as a way to transition between scenes.
  • Heavy use of humour
  • fast paced
  • Scripted
  • Short production times - typically takes a day to film and can be written the same day.
  • Small Crew - Often just two people.
  • Use of Teleprompter on Greenscreen

What we will take from Film Riot

We will try to emulate their comedic approach to episodes and their presenting style, we will also use a green screen with a CG background as it helps sell our channel idea.

As the channel would be "weekly" We would also need to learn how to write to a deadline, something which we struggle to do, however I think this is due to the process of getting interviews and locations which is something Film Riot rarely have to do.
