Sound Design

Sound Design

Before I began filming the Memento Recreation Scene I knew I wanted to Foley some sounds, Foley has interested me for a while, I love how you can pick up ordinary objects and create sounds from them, from the clip clop of horses hooves with coconuts to making the sliding door sounds of Star Wars simply but removing and inserting a piece of paper from an envelope.

To get the sound of water dripping in the sink I took a baking tray and simply tapped it with my finger,  I found that I could control the sound much better this way and it gave the sound a much more solid sound.

To get the sound of the Slap and Punch I slapped the palms of my hands against a closed fist or just a clenched hands, I wanted a realistic sound of skin against skin and I was unable to procure a slab of meat as the one I had at home was frozen, which would not have given me the sound I would need.

To get the sound of pens clicking together I simply got a bunch of pens in my hand and shook them a bit, I did the same for paper rustling I got some paper and ruffled through them.

I also got some sound of searching through stuff, here I went through my camera case to get the sound I wanted of things hitting each other as Leonard searches frantically for a pen.

Initially, I wanted to get a rushing noise, the same noise that happens when you get a bubble of pressure in your ears, however, I had difficulty in finding a sound similar, therefore I changed it to a ringing noise, this was a simpler effect and easier to find.

I also got some atmosphere sound outside since on the day of the shoot there were birds chirping which didn't fit with the serious mood of the scene, Therefore since it was a cold and wet day I recorded just the natural sounds in my garden.

I also recorded the sound of a door opening and closing, I wanted to get a cleaner sound which didnt peak, this gave a better sound which didnt make me wince when playing it back.

In conclusion doing Foley was a good experience, I would have liked to been able to spend more time doing it with a larger area and less external sounds, however it was fun to find different ways of making sounds.
